VA HISA Grant Assistance
The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant helps eligible veterans make medically necessary changes to their homes. This includes adding handrails, widening doorways, installing accessible bathrooms, or adjusting electrical outlets for medical equipment.
Unlike some VA grants, the HISA Grant is available to both service-connected and non-service-connected veterans. The maximum benefit varies:
- Up to $6,800 for service-connected conditions
- Up to $2,000 for non-service-connected conditions
To qualify, veterans must have a prescription from a VA physician and meet basic eligibility guidelines. M&D Construction can evaluate your needs and help you apply, ensuring you get the most from your HISA benefits.

Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant
The SAH Grant is the VA’s largest housing benefit for veterans with serious service-connected disabilities. It helps eligible veterans build, buy, or remodel a home to meet accessibility needs. Typical improvements may include wheelchair ramps, widened hallways, accessible kitchens, and roll-in showers.
For 2025, the maximum SAH benefit is approximately $117,000, which can be used across multiple phases. Veterans must have a qualifying condition, such as:
- Loss of use of both legs
- Blindness in both eyes plus additional disability
- Certain severe burns or respiratory injuries
M&D Construction has experience modifying homes under SAH guidelines. We work closely with families and the VA to meet all accessibility standards while delivering excellent craftsmanship.

The SHA Grant is for veterans with specific service-connected disabilities who want to adapt their current home or the home of a family member. It’s ideal for those with limited mobility or respiratory conditions. The maximum benefit for SHA in 2025 is about $23,000.
Examples of SHA-eligible modifications include:
- Adding grab bars and stair lifts
- Installing non-slip flooring
- Adapting bathrooms or bedrooms for safety
To qualify, a veteran must have a permanent and total disability related to service, such as the loss or loss of use of both hands, or certain breathing issues due to injury.
